5 times teams overturned 3-0 deficits in UCL history: Can Man City do it?

The UEFA Champions League has long been the stage for football’s most dramatic theatre, but few scripts are as improbable as the three-goal comeback.

In the modern era of the competition, only a tiny fraction of teams have managed to overturn such a devastating first-leg deficit.

While many have tried, only five definitive instances stand as testament to the fact that no lead is truly safe until the final whistle blows.

We have taken a look at those instances, as well as Tottenham’s heroic 2019 comeback from 3-0 down with one half left.

Tottenham 3–2 Ajax (2019)

Tottenham Hotspur looked dead and buried in their 2018/19 Champions League semi-final against Ajax after losing 1–0 at home and then falling 2–0 behind by halftime in Amsterdam. With the Dutch side 3–0 up on aggregate, Spurs seemed destined to crash out.

But what followed was one of the most remarkable comebacks in the competition’s history. Lucas Moura ignited hope with two quick goals early in the second half, pouncing on a rebound and then curling home to stun the hosts.

The Brazilian completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, slotting in the decisive strike that sent Tottenham into the final on away goals. Ajax’s players collapsed in disbelief as Spurs celebrated an unforgettable turnaround.

Liverpool 4–0 Barcelona (2019)

The most recent and perhaps most emotional of these recoveries occurred during the 2018–19 semi-finals. Liverpool entered their second leg at Anfield trailing 3–0 to a Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona.

Playing without star forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, the English side produced a performance defined by relentless pressing and tactical ingenuity.

A brace each from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum, capped by a cheeky, quick-taken corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold, secured a 4–0 win on the night and a 4–3 victory on aggregate, sending the Reds to a final they would eventually win.

Roma 3–0 Barcelona (2018)

Just one year prior to the Anfield miracle, Barcelona found themselves on the receiving end of another historic collapse.

After winning the first leg 4–1 at the Nou Camp against AS Roma in the 2017–18 quarter-finals, the Spanish giants appeared to have one foot in the semi-finals.

However, a spirited Roma side took advantage of a complacent Barcelona in the return leg. Goals from Edin Dzeko and Daniele De Rossi set the stage for Kostas Manolas to head home a late third, sealing a 3–0 win.

Roma progressed via the away goals rule, sparking scenes of jubilation in the Italian capital that remain iconic in tournament lore.

Barcelona 6–1 PSG (2017)

While 3–0 deficits are daunting, the 2016–17 season provided the only instance of a team recovering from a four-goal margin.

Barcelona made history in the Round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain. After being humbled 4–0 in Paris, the Catalans returned home to stage ‘La Remontada’.

In a frantic finish that saw three goals scored after the 88th minute, Sergi Roberto’s last-gasp volley secured a 6–1 victory on the night and a 6–5 aggregate triumph.

This match remains the gold standard for European comebacks and is frequently cited as the greatest single-game turnaround in the history of the sport.

Deportivo La Coruna 4–0 AC Milan (2004)

The precedent for these modern miracles was set in the 2003–04 quarter-finals by Deportivo La Coruña. Facing an AC Milan side that featured legends like Kaká, Maldini, and Nesta, Deportivo returned to Spain trailing 4–1 from the first leg.

In a stunning display of clinical finishing, the Spanish underdogs dismantled the defending champions 4–0 at the Estadio Riazor.

This result was the first time in the Champions League era that a three-goal first-leg lead had been successfully overturned, proving to the footballing world that the knockout stages are never truly decided in the first ninety minutes.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
