The US threatens life bans for Nigerians involved in visa fraud, fake applications, and others.

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a stern warning against visa fraud, declaring that individuals found guilty of such offences will face a lifetime ban from entering the U.S.

In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, the mission reiterated the U.S. government’s commitment to combating fraud and curbing illegal immigration through coordinated interagency efforts.

“U.S. government interagency efforts combat fraud and will end illegal immigration. Those who commit visa fraud will be banned from the United States for life,” the post read.

The latest is part of an ongoing clampdown on immigrants and intending migrants to the U.S.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Mission has urged its citizens residing in Nigeria to comply immediately with new immigration directives from the Nigerian government.

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja, in a statement on its website, advised all Americans residing in Nigeria to comply with the new directives to avoid penalties that may be imposed for non-compliance.

The statement dated July 7, 2025, read: “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that effective August 1, 2025, the Nigerian Federal Government will begin imposing strict penalties on foreigners who have overstayed their visas.

“To provide an opportunity for affected individuals to comply with immigration regulations, an online immigration amnesty portal is available until the end of July. The portal allows visitors to regularise their stay before the penalties are enforced.

“U.S. citizens currently in Nigeria who have overstayed their visa are strongly encouraged to regularise their stay through the amnesty portal before July 31, 2025. Failure to do so may result in significant financial penalties and long-term restrictions on re-entry to Nigeria. All U.S. citizens are reminded to adhere to Nigerian visa regulations to avoid complications.”

The latest is part of ongoing clampdown on immigrants and intending migrants to the US.

The US government had earlier threatened to impose tariffs on “any country aligning itself with the anti-American policies of BRICS.”

Trump made the statement while BRICS leaders and associates met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 2025 summit.

The US government had also made public a reduction in validity for most nonimmigrant US visas in Nigeria and other countries, stating that “the reduction in validity is part of an ongoing global review of the use of US visas by other countries using technical and security benchmarks to safeguard US immigration systems.
