Apple Pledges $100 Billion More in US Investment Amid Tariff Pressure from President Trump

Amid rising tariffs, Apple commits $100bn to US expansion, aiming to boost local production and avoid penalties

Apple has announced a fresh $100 billion investment in the United States, adding to its previous $500 billion pledge, as it faces pressure from President Donald Trump to shift more of its production to American soil.

The White House said the new investment will support domestic manufacturing and help Apple avoid steep tariffs, including a planned 100% levy on chips and semiconductors produced abroad.

“Today’s announcement with Apple is another win for our manufacturing industry,” a White House spokesperson said, “that will simultaneously help reshore the production of critical components to protect America’s economic and national security.”

During a joint appearance at the White House, Trump praised Apple’s commitment, saying the company would “massively” increase spending on its domestic supply chain, including new data centers across the country and a smart glass production line in Harrisburg, Kentucky for iPhones and smartwatches.

Standing beside Trump in the Oval Office, Apple CEO Tim Cook highlighted the impact of Apple’s earlier domestic investments and said the company was looking to deepen its commitment.
“The initial $500 billion domestic investment is already yielding results,” Cook said.

“This new funding will spur even more production right here in America for critical components used in Apple products all around the world.”

He added that Apple is guided by a long-term strategy of partnering with “third parties” to build up domestic manufacturing and announced progress on several initiatives, including a manufacturing academy in Michigan and a $500 million deal with MP Materials to buy rare earth magnets produced in the US.

“We’re looking to do more,” Cook said, referencing Apple’s ongoing efforts to expand operations within the US, Cook also presented the president with a handcrafted glass statue made from Apple materials, which he assembled on the Resolute Desk.

The announcement comes after Trump warned Apple earlier this year that it could face tariffs on its products unless it moved iPhone manufacturing to the US In January, the administration introduced a 30% tariff on Chinese-made goods, escalating a new round of trade conflict.

Although Apple has attempted to rework its global supply chain sourcing more from India and Vietnam it still paid over $800 million in border taxes in the three months ending in June and expects to pay another $1.1 billion in coming months. New tariffs on Indian-made goods, which could rise to 50%, have added to the uncertainty.

Despite exemptions on certain electronics, the Trump administration continues to push for deeper reshoring. Since returning to office, Trump has touted corporate investment announcements as victories for US manufacturing though analysts warn that the numbers often appear inflated and don’t reflect a broader trend.

Analysts welcomed Apple’s announcement but questioned how quickly such a vast supply chain could be overhauled.

“Certainly if you look at the case today, it’s impossible to think now everything could just suddenly be produced, manufactured and put together in the US overnight,” said Paolo Pescatore, founder of PP Foresight.

Still, Apple’s stock surged over 5% following the announcement, signaling investor optimism about the company’s evolving relationship with Washington.
