Prof. Tunji Olaopa, the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, has committed to providing improved service to the public following an honor received from the Oyo State government on Tuesday.

The government has announced Olaopa’s nomination for the Oyo State Merit Award, which is part of the celebrations for the state’s golden jubilee. In the letter, it was stated that he is being recognized for his “selfless service to the growth and development of Oyo State and for effectively representing the state on the global stage.”

During the award acceptance ceremony held at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, State Governor Seyi Makinde presented the honor to Olaopa. In his remarks, Olaopa expressed gratitude for the recognition of his efforts. He emphasized the importance of continuing his work in advancing institutional and governance reforms. Olaopa highlighted the need to link Oyo State’s public administration with the federal system to ensure that citizens receive the democratic benefits they require for an improved quality of life.

He expressed gratitude on behalf of himself, the Afijio and Awe community, and the Olaopa family to “our leader, the tireless Governor Seyi Makinde” and his team for deeming him deserving of this recognition.

Olaopa has expressed his commitment to serve the state better and inspire its growth. He made a “solemn promise to you, dear Excellency, that I will continue to work tirelessly to advance Oyo State towards excellence.”

He expressed his deep pride in being from Oyo State, stating, “Regardless of what one achieves in life, there are countless reasons to take pride in hailing from Oyo State.”

The former Federal Permanent Secretary and Professor of Public Administration highlighted several reasons, stating that the state is rich in historical legacies, cultural heritage, and sociopolitical dynamics, making it a significant area for development in the entire south-west Nigeria.

“In discussions about the remarkable era of governance and civil service, the South West, particularly Oyo State, is often highlighted. It stands out as the Pacesetter State, known for its numerous FIRSTS.” Oyo stands out uniquely, embodying the essence of the saying ‘aji se bi Oyo lanri Oyo ki ise eni kokan,’ which holds significant meaning for many of its people.

He further stated that “From the collective responsibilities of past leaders—both traditional and political—to the current and exemplary leadership of the incumbent governor, Oyo State has consistently been guided along the path of internal development in all aspects that truly make it the ‘Pacesetter State’ indeed.” To lead effectively, it is essential to consistently apply innovative thinking that positions the state at the forefront of creative development initiatives.

He stated that it is noteworthy that Oyo State has consistently enjoyed the leadership of dedicated individuals since its establishment in 1976. He has praised Governor Makinde for maintaining a focus on development, highlighting the clear evidence of infrastructural progress achieved under his leadership.

He called on Oyo, the leading state in the South West, to showcase its role as a pioneer in creativity by utilizing inter-state partnerships. This approach aims to maximize economies of scale, enhance infrastructural development, and re-establish the South West as an economic corridor within the framework of fiscal federalism in Nigeria.

Olaopa has emphasized the importance of the central government in Oyo’s development. He stated, “I must say that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has initiated a process that will enhance this development through the establishment of the South West Regional Commission. This, along with frameworks like the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission, serves as a foundation and catalyst for the South West to reach new heights within the Nigerian federation.”

He pointed out that it is fitting to celebrate Oyo State’s 50th anniversary during the impressive tenure of Governor Seyi Makinde. His unwavering dedication to democratic governance and inclusive reforms has brought about significant changes that have clearly elevated the standards of governance in Oyo State.

Olaopa has praised Makinde for his ongoing vision and efforts that have maintained the legacy established by the founding charter of Oyo State in 1976, which has been continuously developed by various leaders since then. Your charisma, professionalism, and courage have sustained the unique spirit of creativity and progress in Oyo State. This spirit sets it apart as a leader in Nigeria’s development landscape, ensuring that Oyo State will define its own identity and never take a backseat to others.
