Unanswered Questions After Coordinated Attacks on ADC Office and Oyegun’s Residence
Authorities are still investigating the violent incidents that disrupted political activities in Edo State last Tuesday, when the state secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was attacked shortly after a key party event.
The disturbance occurred soon after the ADC formally received Mr Olumide Akpata, the 2024 Labour Party governorship candidate in the state. The event was attended by senior political figures, including Mr Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
Eyewitnesses said a group of suspected thugs stormed the party office minutes after the meeting concluded, damaging property and forcing supporters to flee. The situation escalated when the attackers reportedly moved to the private residence of the ADC National Leader, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, where he was hosting Obi, Akpata and other guests.
Security operatives later restored calm, but the incident has sparked debate over its cause.
Tension had been building within the party in the days leading up to the attack. Some senior members were reportedly upset after they were denied access to a leadership meeting at Odigie-Oyegun’s home. Police officers had earlier intervened to prevent a confrontation when the affected members protested outside the residence.
Four days after the violence, the police confirmed that investigations were ongoing and that no arrests had been made.
While some observers suspect that internal disagreements may have contributed to the unrest, others believe the attacks could be politically motivated. Individuals mentioned in connection with the earlier dispute have denied any involvement.
On the day of the incident, Obi had first visited a Catholic nursing school in Benin City, where he made a financial donation, before proceeding to the ADC secretariat.
With no official explanation yet, the events have heightened concerns about security at political gatherings and the growing tension ahead of future elections in the state.
