Otto Addo sacked as Ghana coach after loss to Germany

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially terminated the contract of head coach Otto Addo with immediate effect, as reported by major sports outlets on Tuesday.

This sudden move comes exactly 72 days before the Black Stars are scheduled to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in North America.

The decision was reached following a disastrous March international break where Ghana suffered back-to-back friendly defeats against Austria and Germany.

The 5-1 loss to Austria in particular sparked widespread criticism from fans and officials alike.

Joy Sports reports that the GFA leadership felt a change in technical direction was necessary to prevent a total collapse on the world stage, citing a run of four consecutive losses and the team’s earlier failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Addo leaves his second stint with a record of eight wins, nine losses, and five draws across 22 matches.

While he holds the distinction of being the only coach to lead Ghana to two separate World Cup tournaments, his recent inability to find a winning formula with a talented squad featuring Mohammed Kudus ultimately led to his dismissal.

Looking ahead, Ghanasoccernet suggests that the GFA is moving quickly to find a replacement, with former midfielder Michael Essien being heavily linked to a role in the new technical setup.

The national team is currently slated to face Panama in their World Cup opener on June 17 in Toronto, leaving the incoming coach very little time to stabilize the squad.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
