African Union Rejects Somaliland Recognition, Reaffirms Commitment To Somalia’s Unity And Sovereignty

African Union Chairperson condemns Somaliland recognition efforts, stressing Somalia’s territorial integrity and continental peace must be upheld.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf (@ymahmoudali), has strongly rejected any recognition of Somaliland as an independent entity and reaffirmed the African Union’s unwavering commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia. This statement comes amid growing concerns about recent developments relating to Somaliland’s political status.

Youssouf expressed deep concern over the issue, unequivocally reaffirming the AU’s longstanding and consistent position rooted in the principles enshrined in the Constitutive Act of the African Union. He emphasised the respect for the intangibility of borders inherited at independence, a principle originally affirmed by the 1964 decision of the Organisation of African Unity.

The Chairperson firmly rejects any initiative aimed at recognising Somaliland’s independence, recalling that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. He warned that attempts to undermine Somalia’s unity and sovereignty run counter to the fundamental principles of the African Union and risk creating dangerous precedents with far-reaching consequences for peace and stability across Africa.

Youssouf further reiterated the AU’s full support for the Somali authorities in their ongoing efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions, and promote inclusive governance, which are critical to maintaining Somalia’s territorial integrity.

This reaffirmation reflects the African Union’s commitment to safeguarding the continent’s post-colonial borders, underscoring the AU’s stance against fragmentation and instability. The Chairperson’s remarks send a clear message to both regional and international actors that the African Union remains steadfast in upholding peace, unity, and stability across Africa.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
