CAN Petitions Sanwo-Olu Over ‘Religious Imbalance’ in Surulere Politics

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos has formally petitioned Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over what it described as the marginalisation of Christians in political leadership within the area.

In a letter dated March 10, 2026, and signed by its chairman, James Akingboye, alongside nine other officials, the association expressed concern that the current political structure could threaten the long-standing harmony between religious groups in the community.

CAN stated that out of 13 individuals occupying political offices at both federal and state levels from Surulere, only one — a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly — is a Christian.

The association noted that several prominent political figures from the area, including the Chief of Staff to the President, a member of the House of Representatives, and key local government officials, are Muslims.

While emphasising that Surulere has historically enjoyed peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims, the group warned that continued imbalance in political appointments may disrupt that stability.

According to the association, fairness in leadership should reflect the religious diversity of the community, stressing that the issue is not intended to create division but to promote equity.

CAN also cautioned against any move that could displace the only Christian currently holding a political position within the party structure, noting that such an action would effectively exclude Christians from meaningful participation in decision-making.

The group called on Governor Sanwo-Olu to address the imbalance by ensuring inclusive representation, specifically urging that the positions of party secretary and treasurer in Surulere be assigned to qualified Christians.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
