Court Pushes Anthony Joshua Crash Case to April After New Evidence Claim
A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus sport utility vehicle involved in the crash that conveyed former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to April 16, 2026.
At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, counsel representing the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), R.D. Kadiri, informed the court that his team had received fresh information earlier in the day which needed to be incorporated into the case. He subsequently requested additional time to properly include the new details.
However, counsel to the defendant, Abiodun Olalekan, raised objections, expressing concern over what he described as delay tactics by the prosecution. He argued that the repeated requests for adjournment were wasting valuable time.
Presiding Magistrate, Olufunmilayo Somefun, thereafter granted the request and adjourned the matter to April 16, 2026.
This development marks another in a series of adjournments in the case, largely at the instance of the prosecution. At the previous sitting on February 25, Kadiri had also requested more time to gather additional evidence and secure witnesses, following the transfer of the case file from the police to the Ogun State DPP.
Earlier proceedings on January 20 saw counsel to the police, Richard Nigiwe, request an adjournment to allow for duplication of the case file and its submission to the Attorney-General through the DPP for legal advice. The matter was subsequently adjourned to February 25 before being further shifted to March 17.
The case stems from a fatal road accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Sagamu corridor near the Sinoma area in Ogun State. The vehicle conveying Joshua and three others reportedly collided with a stationary truck while travelling from Lagos.
While Joshua survived the incident with minor injuries, two of his close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, lost their lives. Ghami was a longtime associate of the boxer and served as his strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was his personal trainer.
Joshua was later treated at Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi and discharged on December 31, 2025, after receiving medical care for his injuries.
