Eric Dane, Grey’s Anatomy Star Dies Aged 53 After ALS Battle

Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria actor dies at 53 after ALS diagnosis, tributes pour in.

Eric Dane, best known for playing Dr Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, has died at the age of 53 following a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The California-born actor revealed last year that he was living with ALS, the most common form of motor neurone disease, a progressive condition that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. In recent months, he had been raising awareness about the illness.

In a statement, his family says he passes away on Thursday afternoon after a courageous fight, surrounded by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. They describe his children as the center of his world and thank fans for their continued love and support.

Dane first gains widespread recognition as the charismatic “Dr McSteamy” on Grey’s Anatomy, becoming a fan favorite on the long-running medical drama. He later takes on darker roles, including family patriarch Cal Jacobs in Euphoria.

Over his career, he also appears in series such as Charmed and The Last Ship, as well as films including Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day and Burlesque.

Speaking last summer on Good Morning America, he admits feeling anger about his diagnosis, reflecting on losing his own father at a young age and fearing his daughters might face a similar loss.

Co-stars pay tribute following news of his death. Kim Raver praises his playful spirit and sharp comedic timing, while Kevin McKidd shares a simple farewell message. Euphoria creator Sam Levinson calls working with him an honor and his friendship a gift.

Dane leaves behind a legacy of memorable television roles and a career that spans more than three decades.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
