FCCPC Considers Refund for Passengers Over High Christmas Airfares

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has said airlines currently being investigated for the sharp increase in airfares during the 2025 Christmas season may be asked to refund passengers if they are found guilty of fixing ticket prices.

The commission began an industry-wide investigation in December 2025 after many Nigerians complained about the sudden rise in the cost of flight tickets during the festive period. Several travellers said fares increased drastically within a short time, making it difficult for many people to travel during the holidays.

According to the FCCPC, the ongoing probe is to determine whether the increase in ticket prices was caused by normal market demand or if some airlines worked together to deliberately raise fares.

The commission explained that if the investigation shows that passengers were unfairly charged, the affected airlines could be directed to refund those who paid excessive prices for tickets.

The FCCPC also stressed that Nigeria’s consumer protection laws do not allow businesses to manipulate prices in a way that harms consumers or limits fair competition.

The agency added that the investigation is still ongoing and any final decision will depend on the outcome of its findings.

Concerns about the high cost of domestic flights in Nigeria have continued to grow, especially during festive seasons when many people travel across the country. The FCCPC said it remains committed to protecting consumers and ensuring fairness in the aviation sector.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
