FG Fulfils Housing Promise to D’Tigress After Historic Afrobasket Triumph
The Federal Government has fulfilled part of its reward package to Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic victory at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket.
D’Tigress made history in August 2025 by becoming the first team to win the continental championship five consecutive times. The team secured the title after defeating Mali 78–64 in the final held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
In recognition of the achievement, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, had earlier conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger on each player and member of the technical crew. The government also announced financial rewards and housing allocations as part of its commitment to reward excellence in sports.
The National Sports Commission has now confirmed that the housing promise has been fulfilled. According to the commission, all players and officials have received documents for their allocated flats in the Federal Capital Territory, along with certificates confirming their national honours.
The presentation of the housing documents reportedly took place in Lyon, France, where the team is currently competing in the qualifying tournament for the FIBA Women’s World Cup.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, stated that the cash rewards earlier announced by the government are also close to being paid. He explained that the one hundred thousand dollars promised to each player, as well as the fifty thousand dollars earmarked for members of the technical crew, are in the final stages of processing and will be credited to the beneficiaries soon.
The latest development has been welcomed by sports stakeholders, who see it as a positive step toward restoring confidence in government promises to athletes. Observers say consistent fulfilment of such commitments will play a key role in motivating Nigerian sportsmen and women to continue delivering strong performances on the international stage.
