FRSC Takes Road Safety Campaign to Church in Nnewi

The Federal Road Safety Corps, RS5.3 Anambra Sector Command, has stepped up its efforts to cut road crashes, injuries and deaths by ten per cent through sustained public education and community engagement.

As part of this campaign, the Command held a church advocacy programme on Sunday at St Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Umudim, Nnewi. The outreach brought together worshippers and members of the community for practical discussions on road safety.

Speaking during the service, the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekauno, explained that the initiative was created to strengthen road safety awareness and encourage responsible behaviour among all road users. She said the programme forms part of broader measures to reduce traffic crashes across Anambra State.

She addressed key safety concerns, including pedestrian protection, the need to wear crash helmets, the risks of overloading and mixed loading, proper traffic conduct, the dangers of driving against traffic, underage driving and the serious consequences of speeding.

Asekauno urged motorists, commercial drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians to adopt a culture of safety and serve as role models within their communities. She stressed that safer roads require collective responsibility and strict compliance with traffic rules.

The officiating priest, Rev. Father Daniel Ileka, thanked the FRSC team for the visit and described the engagement as timely and impactful. He offered prayers for the Corps and assured continued support from the church in spreading road safety messages. He also appealed for the creation of a Special Marshal Unit for the church.

The programme was attended by the Unit Commander of RS5.32 Nnewi Unit Command, other command staff and Special Marshals, highlighting the collaborative nature of the initiative. More than 1,500 worshippers and community members were present.

Participants received road safety flyers and educational materials to reinforce the lessons shared during the service. An interactive session allowed attendees to ask questions and seek clarification on various road safety issues.

The outreach ended with a thanksgiving led by the Sector Commander, the Nnewi Unit Commander and members of the FRSC team, marking what many described as a meaningful step in strengthening partnership between the Corps and faith-based organisations in promoting safer roads across Anambra State.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
