Meta Acquires AI Social Platform Moltbook to Boost Superintelligence Research
The deal will see the Moltbook team join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs as the company continues to expand its research into advanced artificial intelligence systems.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Meta described Moltbook’s concept as a new development in the fast evolving field of AI, noting that the acquisition could help create new ways for AI agents to assist individuals and businesses.
Meta did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition, while Moltbook has yet to release an official statement on the deal.
Moltbook was launched in January as an experimental platform where AI powered programs could hold conversations with each other on forum style message boards similar to Reddit.
The platform attracted attention within the technology community because it allowed AI bots to engage in independent discussions without direct human control. In some cases, the bots were observed discussing or even gossiping about their human operators.
The experiment has generated both excitement and concern among experts, particularly over the ethical and cyber security risks associated with increasingly autonomous artificial intelligence systems.
The acquisition comes at a time when major technology companies are intensifying efforts to develop AI agents capable of planning and carrying out complex tasks on behalf of users.
Meta’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, has previously indicated that the company plans to significantly increase investment in artificial intelligence as it competes with companies such as OpenAI and Google.
The Silicon Valley firm has been expanding its AI portfolio through acquisitions and partnerships. In December, Meta also acquired Manus, a company founded in China that focuses on building general purpose AI bots.
Moltbook was developed using OpenClaw, an AI agent designed to function as a personal digital assistant on users’ computers. The tool can perform tasks such as drafting emails, organising schedules and even building simple applications.
Users can configure OpenClaw to control various functions on their devices and automate tasks. Its integration with Moltbook also allows users to observe how their AI agents interact with other bots.
OpenClaw was created by Peter Steinberger, who was recently hired by OpenAI.
According to Sam Altman, Steinberger is expected to help drive the development of the next generation of personal AI agents capable of interacting with each other to perform useful tasks for users.
Since it was released as an open source tool in late 2025, OpenClaw has attracted strong interest from developers experimenting with autonomous AI systems.
However, cyber security experts have warned about the potential risks of connecting powerful AI tools to devices used for everyday applications. Authorities in China have also raised concerns about possible vulnerabilities linked to the software, particularly after several government agencies and technology companies began testing the system.
