Nigeria Customs Service Launches Operation Whirlwind to Combat Fuel Smuggling
In a significant move to tackle fuel smuggling, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has deployed newly inducted officers to Operation Whirlwind, a tactical unit established in May 2024. The induction ceremony, held on June 3, 2025, in Abuja, marked a renewed commitment to safeguarding the nation’s economy by preventing the illegal movement of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) across Nigeria’s borders.
Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, addressed the new operatives, emphasizing the importance of integrity and professionalism in their roles. “We must always affirm to be above board on all matters,” he stated, urging officers to maintain high ethical standards and avoid any abuse of power. He highlighted the critical role of the NCS in ensuring fuel availability within Nigeria and preventing smuggling into neighboring countries.

Adeniyi also pointed out the necessity of leveraging technology in their operations, mentioning the use of Geospatial Intelligence tools to enhance fieldwork. ACG Hussein Ejibunu, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, echoed these sentiments, stressing that the mission’s success relies on strategic execution, discipline, and individual commitment from the officers.
Operation Whirlwind is set to play a crucial role in safeguarding Nigeria’s fuel supply chain, while reaffirming the NCS’s role in national economic security.
