Nigerian Doctor Alerts Public About Dangers Of Contaminated Tomatoes
Nigerians have been advised not to eat spoiled tomatoes and other foods contaminated with fungus by well-known health influencer Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor.
Egemba said that rotten tomatoes, also known as Ata Esha or Awarawa, frequently contain fungal growths that produce toxic substances in a health advisory posted on X on Monday.
“This tomato, commonly called spoiled tomatoes (Ata Esha) or awarawa… there’s a poison inside this tomato that a lot of you don’t know about, but you’re eating it every day.”
“Those white things inside the tomato is caused by a fungus that produces a toxin known as aflatoxin… aflatoxin has been shown to actually cause liver cancer in adults. If you give it to children, it can cause stunted growth as well as other things.”
“You might think you are saving money by eating this type of tomato, but you are actually risking your life.”
The doctor is absolutely right. We are fully aware that tomatoes and peppers are often expensive and hard to come by, but prioritizing our health is essential. Investing in safe, uncontaminated food is a small price to pay for our well-being. Ultimately, taking precautions and being cautious about what we consume is vital for our health and future.
