Troops Repel Boko Haram Attack on Military Base in Borno

Troops of Sector 3 of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, have successfully repelled an attack by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters on a military base in Doron Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

Security and local sources said the insurgents launched the attack in the early hours of Tuesday, arriving at the military formation at about 2:12 a.m. The terrorists reportedly engaged troops in a fierce gun battle that lasted for nearly an hour.

The latest assault comes less than 24 hours after insurgents carried out multiple attacks on military formations in Marte, Jakana, Mainok and Kunduga in Borno State.

According to a security source, troops maintained their position during the encounter and successfully repelled the attackers after several hours of intense fighting.

The source said many of the insurgents were killed during the operation, while troops also recovered arms and ammunition abandoned by the fleeing terrorists.

“There was no loss of life among the troops, and only two civilians were injured by shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade that landed in a residential building,” the source said.

Another security source confirmed that one soldier sustained serious injuries during the encounter, while two civilians also suffered varying degrees of injuries. The injured persons are currently receiving treatment.

The fighting reportedly continued until about 5:50 a.m., after which the terrorists retreated from the area.

Military sources said troops maintained tactical control throughout the operation and did not record any loss of equipment.

Security operatives in the area have since intensified surveillance and remain on high alert for possible follow up attacks by the insurgents.

Residents of the community have also been urged to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist in the ongoing fight against insurgency in the Northeast.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
