UAE, Qatar Suspend Flights as Iran Attacks US Military Targets
The United Arab Emirates has closed its airspace following a wave of missile UAE, Qatar Suspend Flights as Iran Attacks US Military Targets launched by Iran against United States military installations across the Middle East, in what officials describe as a retaliatory escalation.
The development led Qatar Airways to suspend all flight operations after Qatar also shut its airspace as a precautionary measure.
Explosions were reported in several regional capitals, including Abu Dhabi, Manama, Doha and Kuwait City, as well as Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, heightening fears of a broader regional confrontation.
Authorities in Bahrain confirmed that a missile struck near the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Juffair. Thick smoke was seen rising from the vicinity of the naval facility. Earlier, Bahrain’s interior ministry had issued an emergency advisory calling on residents to remain indoors and seek shelter.
In Abu Dhabi, reports indicated that missile defence systems intercepted several incoming projectiles. Local sources said at least one casualty was recorded during the incident. Emirati officials condemned the attack, calling it a serious breach of sovereignty and international law, and stated that the country reserves the right to respond.
Qatar’s defence ministry said its air defence units intercepted multiple missiles aimed at its territory, adding that the actions were carried out in line with established security protocols. Despite the interceptions, Doha closed its airspace, triggering widespread flight disruptions.
Kuwait also announced the temporary suspension of air traffic as part of emergency measures.
The missile launches are believed to be in response to coordinated US and Israeli strikes on Iranian cities earlier in the week. Israel had described those operations as pre-emptive actions aimed at neutralising perceived threats.
