World leaders join thousands in Vatican for Pope Francis’ funeral

The funeral of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday at the age of 88 after a period of ill health, is taking place at the Vatican, drawing huge crowds who have come to pay their final respects.

Dozens of world leaders and dignitaries — including US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Prince William — have joined an estimated 200,000 mourners, with 50,000 gathered inside St Peter’s Square.

President Trump and President Zelensky met inside St Peter’s Basilica before the funeral, with the White House describing the meeting as “very productive,” according to the BBC.

Trump sat on the front row of the service alongside the presidents of Finland and Estonia, two staunch supporters of Ukraine, reports Europe Digital Editor Paul Kirby.

“The outpouring of affection… tells us how much the profound pontificate of Pope Francis touched minds and hearts,” said Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who led the funeral service.

Applause echoed through St Peter’s Square as President Zelensky arrived for the funeral.

Thousands of mourners, including royalty and senior politicians, have filled the square for the service.

Pope Francis’ coffin was carried out of St Peter’s Basilica into the square as part of the funeral procession.
