Atletico, Arsenal Play Out Tense 1-1 Champions League Semi-Final First Leg
Arsenal and Atletico Madrid played out a 1-1 draw in a cagey Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday, with both goals coming from the penalty spot as neither side seized a decisive advantage ahead of the return fixture.
Viktor Gyokeres gave Arsenal the lead just before halftime, calmly converting from the spot after being fouled inside the box. Atletico Madrid responded early in the second half, with Julian Alvarez equalising via a penalty after a VAR review penalised a handball.
Despite flashes of attacking intent, the match lacked the intensity of the previous semi-final clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, with both teams adopting a more cautious, tactical approach.
Atletico created the better chances after the break, with Antoine Griezmann striking the crossbar and Alvarez testing David Raya, but failed to find a winner. Arsenal also had a late penalty decision overturned following VAR intervention, ensuring the tie remains finely balanced.
“We gave it everything and had chances to win,” said Atletico captain Koke. “It’s still wide open going into the second leg.”
Gyokeres acknowledged the shift in momentum after halftime, saying, “We controlled the first half, but they came out stronger. It was a tough game overall.”
Atletico manager Diego Simeone added, “These matches are decided by small details. We stayed competitive and will fight for it in London.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta remained confident, noting, “We’ll take the result and focus on finishing the job at home with our supporters.”
The winner of the second leg will advance to face either PSG or Bayern Munich in the final.
