Ayra Starr Reveals The Power Struggle Of Growing Up In Nigeria
Ayra Starr, a Nigerian singer-songwriter, has openly discussed how unstable electricity influenced her upbringing and strengthened her fortitude.
As she talked about her childhood, she recalled helping her grandmother sell pepper and tomatoes, explaining that they frequently had to sell quickly because there was no electricity to preserve the goods.
“Every Nigerian child has faced some type of electricity issues. My grandma used to sell tomatoes and pepper and I used to assist her. We had to sell it quickly because we didn’t have electricity to store them. The harsh experience made me who I am today. Because I had to find ways to do what I had to do without the comfort of electricity. Growing up, having electricity would have made a big difference. If I came back from school and I had AC or even a fan in the heat while doing my assignments, that would have made a big difference,” she said.
Electricity remains a major challenge in Nigeria, severely impacting businesses and everyday life.
Many entrepreneurs struggle to keep their operations running smoothly due to unreliable power supply, leading to closures and economic setbacks.
What makes it even more frustrating is the hefty bills that are often impossible to pay, coupled with confusing tariffs that leave consumers feeling helpless.
Until consistent and affordable electricity becomes a priority, these issues will continue to hinder Nigeria’s growth and progress.
