Barcelona Femeni thrash Real Madrid 6-2 in UCL quarter-final

Barcelona Femení etched their names into the history books on Wednesday night, securing a stunning 6-2 away victory against Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final.

The masterclass at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano not only placed the Catalan giants on the verge of their eighth consecutive semi-final but also produced a scoreline that perfectly mirrored the men’s team’s iconic 2009 Clásico triumph inspired by Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry.

The visitors dictated the tempo from the opening whistle, racing into a two-goal lead within the first thirteen minutes.

Ewa Pajor led the clinical display with a brace, while Esmee Brugts and Irene Paredes added to the tally to ensure Barcelona remained in total control.

Despite a spirited individual performance from Linda Caicedo, who scored both goals for the hosts, Real Madrid struggled to cope with Barcelona’s tactical intelligence and ability to manipulate their defensive shape.

Vicky Lopez and a late Alexia Putellas penalty rounded off the scoring to seal a massive advantage to take back to Catalonia.

In the aftermath of the whistle, midfielder Patri Guijarro, who was instrumental in controlling the midfield, described the performance as a complete match worthy of the Champions League stage.

While acknowledging the historical weight of the 6-2 result, Guijarro remained humble, emphasizing that the team’s identity and stylistic execution were more important than the specific margin of victory.

She highlighted the team’s elite experience in neutralizing Madrid’s high press, which allowed them to create goal-scoring opportunities at will throughout the ninety minutes.

This victory extends Barcelona’s overwhelming dominance in the fixture, marking their 22nd win in 23 meetings against their rivals.

The result sets a daunting task for Real Madrid ahead of the return leg at the Spotify Camp Nou next Thursday.

This clash served as the opening act of a rare ‘Triple Clásico’ week, with the two sides scheduled to meet again in Liga F this Sunday before their final European showdown to decide who advances to the semi-finals.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
