BREAKING: IGP Disu Orders End to Illegal Detention, ATM Extortion, Unprofessional Conduct

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has issued a firm directive ordering police officers nationwide to immediately stop illegal detention, ATM extortion, and other forms of misconduct.

The order, which was communicated across commands, emphasises zero tolerance for unlawful arrests, prolonged detention without charge, and the harassment of citizens for financial gain. The IGP warned that any officer found violating these directives would face strict disciplinary action.

He also raised concerns about the image of the Force, condemning shabby dressing and unprofessional appearance among officers. Personnel were reminded to maintain proper uniform standards and present themselves in a manner that reflects discipline and respect for the institution.

As part of the renewed enforcement of internal regulations, the directive also touched on grooming standards, including restrictions on the wearing of beards, in a bid to ensure uniformity and professionalism within the ranks.

The move follows increasing public complaints about police misconduct, particularly incidents involving alleged ATM extortion and harassment of young Nigerians. The IGP stressed that rebuilding public trust is a priority and encouraged members of the public to report erring officers.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to uphold the rule of law, protect citizens’ rights, and operate with accountability and integrity.

Observers say the directive signals a renewed push to reform policing standards and improve relations between officers and the public.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

QUOTES

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
