Datti Baba-Ahmed Quits Labour Party Over Unresolved Issues, Joins PRP

2023 Labour Party VP candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed says he is leaving the Labour Party and joining the PRP, citing unresolved internal issues.

The Labour Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has announced his decision to leave the party and join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), citing unresolved internal issues and a departure from the party’s founding ideals.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed said his exit from the opposition party would take effect by midnight on Wednesday.

“I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow [Wednesday]. There is more to it. When there was real peace in the Labour Party, was when they posted back,” he said.

Explaining his grievances, he alleged internal manoeuvring within the party that, according to him, was aimed at undermining him personally.

“They redeployed someone with a specific purpose, and because of the antecedence of the individual, to make life difficult, particularly for me. What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today,” he added.

Baba-Ahmed confirmed that his next political destination would be the PRP, describing it as a party with a long historical legacy.

“I am leaving the Labour Party at midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination. PRP is the one with a history. It’s about 75 years old,” he said.

His resignation comes at a time when the Labour Party is facing deepening internal divisions, with key stakeholders openly disagreeing over leadership direction and party strategy. The crisis has led to competing factions and ongoing struggles for control within the party structure.

On Tuesday, the party elected Nenadi Usman as its substantive national chairperson, a move seen as part of efforts to stabilise its leadership amid the lingering disputes.
