Drama as over 150 bandits drown in Sokoto river

No fewer than 150 suspected bandits have reportedly drowned after a boat conveying them capsized in Sabon Gida area of Sokoto State.

A counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, made this known in a post via X.

Makama disclosed that the incident happened on Saturday evening when the vessel carrying a large number of armed men, overturned while crossing a water body in the area.

He said the bandits were travelling in large numbers when the boat suddenly capsized, throwing all occupants into the water.

“Preliminary information suggests that many of them could not swim, leading to heavy casualties,” he said.

He added that initial reports indicated that none of the occupants survived the incident.

There has been no official confirmation from security agencies as of the time of filing this report.

Last year, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency on security in a bid to curb the rising breakdown of law and order across the country.

However, despite this move, bandits, terrorists, and other criminal groups have continued to operate, often evading the eyes of security operatives.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
