Former Police Affairs Minister Adamu Waziri Resigns From PDP, Joins ADC
A former Minister of Police Affairs and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adamu Maina Waziri, has announced his resignation from the party, citing the need to act “in the interest of the nation”.
Waziri, who is also a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT), declared his decision on Monday at the Dogo Tebo ward in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State.
“For record purposes, let it be known that the current leadership and tone of the party are inconsistent with the leadership of a major party that should offer an alternative platform to its members to exercise their inalienable right and freedom of choice in any electoral contest,” Waziri said.
He attributed his resignation to the “exigencies of the moment and in the interest of the nation,” adding that his departure from the PDP was necessary under the current political climate.
The former minister announced that he would be joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with immediate effect.
Waziri’s defection comes amid a wave of high-profile departures from the PDP, as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. The ADC was recently unveiled as a coalition platform by opposition figures seeking to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Prominent leaders in the emerging coalition include former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections; Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation; and Nasir el-Rufai, former Governor of Kaduna State.
Others in the coalition are Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice; Victor Umeh, Senator representing Anambra Central; Ireti Kingibe, Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); and Akeem Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in 2023.
