How can you send a child to prison for two years over few Twitter lines?’: Sowore blasts AG Baby

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticized singer Adekunle Gold over the reported imprisonment of a social media user accused of making false claims online about the musician and his family.

Speaking during an interview that has since gone viral on social media, Sowore questioned the decision by Adekunle Gold and his wife, Simi, to pursue legal action that allegedly led to a young man spending more than two years in prison over comments posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Sowore argued that public figures should learn to ignore false rumours instead of using law enforcement agencies to punish critics or online commentators.

According to him, “How dare Adekunle Gold, after getting some little money and fame, send somebody to jail for two years for writing something we all know is not true? Yesterday people were calling me that my wife and children had died in the US. I simply called them to confirm they were alive and moved on.”

The activist also referenced previous incidents involving notable personalities, including former US President Donald Trump and a Kaduna-based religious leader who was falsely declared dead during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sowore said the situation highlights what he described as a growing culture of oppression among influential Nigerians.

How can you sit down with police and prosecutors to jail someone for two and a half years because of three lines on Twitter? Nigerians complain about oppression until they get small power, then they become worse,” he added.

The controversy comes amid ongoing debates in Nigeria surrounding cybercrime laws, freedom of online expression, and the arrest of social media users over controversial posts.

@MzTaiwoO ·reacted, “Some people are so used to opposing the government that they end up defending people who actually did wrong just because they’re in prison. At some point, accountability has to matter too. We are who we are, and that mentality is part of why we are where we are.”

@daveXaints uttered, “Adekunle Gold is a coward and an oppressor for handle that issue that way because it doesn’t make sense sending someone to 2 years in prison for something he and his wife has done before without being convicted.”

@Timi_Pointblank  remarked, “Truth is, can we all truly live in a world where you go down for what you say?? Are we all sure we want to operate in that realm.. North Korea style.. cos I see mumu people here typing “be accountable” it is social bloody media, dont join if you have cold feet!!!!”

Kyro_Koncepts uttered, “Lmao It’s not AG’s fault that Jonathan didn’t make an arrest. Gone are the days where bangers boys were intellects doing creative things to gain attention, now na to cook up horrible stories about celebrities. I even feel like 2.5yrs is little, make it 4.”

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
