IGP Disu Appoints Anthony Okon Placid as New Police Spokesperson
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon Placid as the new Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force.
Placid takes over from Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the development in an official statement. The appointment forms part of the ongoing restructuring within the police leadership aimed at strengthening communication and rebuilding public confidence in the Force.
Anthony Okon Placid is described as a seasoned police officer with more than three decades of experience in law enforcement. Over the years, he has served in various capacities covering administration, intelligence operations, training and international peacekeeping assignments.
Police authorities say his appointment reflects the commitment of the Inspector-General to improve transparency and strengthen the relationship between the police and the public. As the new spokesperson, Placid is expected to lead the Force’s communication strategy, handle crisis messaging and ensure that information from the police is communicated clearly and responsibly to the public.
Security analysts note that the role of the Force Public Relations Officer remains critical because the office serves as the official voice of the police institution. The position often requires balancing public communication with sensitive security information, especially at a time when the country continues to face security challenges including banditry, kidnappings and other forms of violent crime.
Observers also believe Placid’s academic background in law and diplomacy could help the Force address complex national issues with professionalism and tact. His experience is expected to provide continuity in the police communication structure while also supporting reforms introduced under the leadership of the Inspector-General.
The appointment is widely viewed as part of broader efforts by the police leadership to reposition the Nigeria Police Force and strengthen its engagement with citizens, particularly in an era where public trust and transparent communication have become increasingly important in national security management.
