JUST IN: Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed Dumps PDP, Joins APM
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the Allied Peoples Movement, bringing an end to weeks of intense speculation over his political future.
Mohammed announced his defection on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting where he was formally received into the APM and presented with the party’s membership card, constitution and flag.
Speaking at the meeting, the governor described the APM as a credible political platform free from internal legal disputes, adding that the move would allow him and his supporters to continue serving the people effectively.
“At this point, I wish to acknowledge and appreciate the Peoples Democratic Party for the important role it has played in our collective political journey,” Mohammed said.
“It has been a platform through which we have served, grown and contributed meaningfully to the development of our state and dear nation. We remain grateful for this history and opportunity.”
He added that the decision followed what he described as extensive consultations with political allies and stakeholders.
“After extensive and wide consultations, we have taken a firm and strategic decision to join APM,” he said.
The announcement ends months of uncertainty surrounding Mohammed’s next political move amid the leadership crisis rocking the PDP.
The governor had recently been linked with possible defections to the African Democratic Congress and the All Progressives Congress.
On April 18, the Bauchi chapter of the PDP confirmed that discussions with the APC over a possible alliance had collapsed after both sides failed to agree on a proposed power-sharing arrangement.
Sama’ila Burga had earlier disclosed that the party and the governor were exploring alternative political options before Saturday’s official declaration.
