Kano Governor Nominates Murtala Garo As Deputy, Seeks Assembly Confirmation

Governor Yusuf forwards Garo’s nomination after consultations, following Gwarzo’s resignation and APC stakeholders’ recommendations in Kano State.

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has nominated Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor, formally transmitting his name to the State House of Assembly for confirmation.

The development follows what the government described as “wide consultation” before arriving at the decision.

In a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Garo, a former local government commissioner, emerged from a list of three nominees submitted by stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement noted that the APC legacy group, led by former National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, had recommended three candidates for consideration — Murtala Garo, Alhassan Rurum, and Sulaiman Bichi, a former Secretary to the State Government.

Garo’s nomination comes after the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, who stepped down from the position on 27 March 2026, creating the vacancy.

The State House of Assembly is expected to consider the nomination and decide on his confirmation in the coming days.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
