Nigerian Student Jailed 10 Years In UK For Raping Teenager

A Nigerian postgraduate student has been sentenced to 10 years in the UK for raping a stranded 17-year-old girl.

A United Kingdom court has sentenced Nigerian postgraduate student, Chiemka Okoronta, to 10 years in prison for raping a 17-year-old girl in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

The assault occurred on March 25, 2025, after a night bus unexpectedly terminated in Morley, Leeds, leaving both Okoronta and the teenager stranded. Prosecutors told Bradford Crown Court that Okoronta offered to share a taxi to Bradford with the victim after her phone battery died, but diverted the vehicle to his flat where he lured her inside and raped her.

The 29-year-old postgraduate student locked the girl inside a bathroom during the assault. The victim later escaped and used a passer-by’s phone to call the police.

In her victim impact statement, the teenager described how the incident “turned my life upside down,” adding, “I have flashbacks of what happened to me, I have nightmares, one minute I feel fine and the next minute it all comes back.”

Delivering judgment, Judge Sophie McKone described Okoronta as “a dangerous sexual predator,” noting that he deliberately isolated and attacked the girl.

“I am satisfied that when you asked if she wanted to share your taxi to Bradford, you formulated a plan that would get her back to your flat where you could rape her,” McKone said.

Okoronta, who was convicted on multiple rape counts, will also serve three additional years on extended licence and be placed on the sex offenders register for life. He is also likely to be deported to Nigeria after serving his sentence.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Sue Sutcliffe of West Yorkshire Police commended the victim’s courage for reporting the incident immediately.

“I would like to commend the victim in this case for her immense bravery in coming forward straight away to report this horrific crime. I would urge anyone who has been the victim of a sexual offence to please report it to us so we can take action,” she said.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
