Chelsea’s pursuit of a top-four Premier League finish suffered a significant blow on Saturday as they fell to a 1-0 home defeat against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
The match was decided in the 18th minute when Anthony Gordon capitalised on a defensive lapse to score the only goal of the game.
The Mirror reports that the goal originated from a mistake by Alejandro Garnacho, which allowed Newcastle to break Chelsea’s high press through a quick transition.
Joe Willock exploited the resulting space behind the back line before squaring the ball for Gordon to tap in against the run of play.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Liam Rosenior’s side was unable to recover their early momentum and was ultimately punished for a momentary breakdown in defensive structure.
Thierry Henry delivered a sharp critique of Liam Rosenior’s touchline demeanour during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
Using freeze-frame footage of the buildup to the winning goal, Henry highlighted how the Chelsea head coach appeared passive and disengaged as Newcastle dismantled his team’s press.
“He [Liam Rosenior] is not even looking at what’s happening… goal,” Henry said, pointing out that the manager turned his back and walked away from the action instead of urgently coaching his players to adapt and recover shape.
