On Al Jazeera, Bwala Rejects Claims of Earlier Attacks on Tinubu

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, has denied previously making several critical remarks attributed to him about the president.

Bwala made the clarification during an appearance on Head to Head, hosted by journalist Mehdi Hasan on Al Jazeera.

The episode examined the performance of Tinubu’s administration under the theme “Nigeria: Renewed Hope or Hopelessness?” During the discussion, Hasan confronted Bwala with past comments, video clips, and statements allegedly made while he was part of the opposition and associated with the presidential campaign of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

At one point, the host referred to a statement reportedly made by Bwala in January 2023 accusing Tinubu of creating a militia to influence the election process. Bwala rejected the claim and said he had never made such a statement.

The interviewer also mentioned an earlier allegation suggesting that large sums of money were moved into Tinubu’s residence during the election period. Bwala again dismissed the assertion, maintaining that the remarks were never made by him.

Hasan further raised the issue of alleged threats. Clips circulating online had shown Bwala previously suggesting that he faced intimidation from Tinubu or individuals linked to his political camp after he criticised the then-candidate of the All Progressives Congress. Bwala, however, denied making those claims as well.

Responding to questions about his change in position, the presidential aide explained that his earlier comments were made while he was operating within the opposition. According to him, opposition figures are expected to challenge and criticise those in power.

He added that the remarks belonged to a different political period and should not be viewed in the same context as his current role within the Tinubu administration.

QUOTES

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
