Poland Challenges US Commitment To NATO As Russian Fears Rise

Poland raises concerns over US NATO commitment, challenges alliance reliability, urges stronger European defence Russia fears rise

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has raised doubts about whether the United States would remain a reliable ally if Russia attacked a NATO member.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has questioned the commitment of the United States to the NATO, warning that Europe faces its “biggest, most important question” over Washington’s loyalty in the event of a Russian attack, according to the Financial Times

Tusk’s remarks reflect growing unease across Europe over US foreign policy direction and uncertainty surrounding former President Donald Trump’s stance toward allies. He stressed that Poland needs clarity that all NATO members will uphold their defence obligations without hesitation.

Speaking ahead of an informal European Union summit in Cyprus, Tusk urged the bloc to evolve into a “real alliance” capable of defending the continent more effectively. EU leaders are expected to discuss the Middle East conflict, energy security, and the bloc’s long-term budget during the meeting.

Tusk also pointed to the EU’s mutual defence clause, Article 42.7, suggesting it should be reassessed as Europe strengthens its security framework. His comments come amid shifting political dynamics in the region and concerns about internal divisions.

He emphasized the need for practical military capabilities, including improved coordination, mobility of troops across borders, and stronger defence tools, warning that these are urgent challenges rather than long-term ambitions.

Tusk added that his priority is to “reintegrate Europe” through a unified defence strategy, calling for collective efforts to secure the continent’s eastern borders against potential threats.

QUOTES

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
