Senate Confirms Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq as INEC National Electoral Commissioner

Published on

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the nomination of Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq, a retired rear admiral, as a national electoral commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), representing Nigeria’s North-East geopolitical zone.

Her confirmation followed the consideration of her nomination by the Senate after it was forwarded to lawmakers by Bola Tinubu, the President of Nigeria.

President Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate on February 17, requesting the screening and confirmation of Abubakar-Sadiq for the position.

After reviewing the nomination, the Senate approved her appointment, paving the way for her to join the electoral body responsible for conducting and supervising elections in the country.

Abubakar-Sadiq, a retired senior officer of the Nigerian Navy, will represent the North-East on the commission’s board.

The Independent National Electoral Commission plays a key role in managing Nigeria’s electoral process, including voter registration, election organisation, and the announcement of results.

Her appointment is expected to strengthen the leadership structure of the commission as it continues preparations for future elections across the country.
