God is a revealer and takes great pleasure in unveiling things to us. However, His joy goes beyond simply disclosing information about our circumstances; He finds delight in revealing His true nature to us. Throughout history, God has consistently chosen to connect with people in ordinary ways and in common places. From His encounter with Abram, to His meeting Moses in the burning bush, and to the meeting with this woman by the well, these interactions demonstrate the accessibility of God’s presence.
“A woman of Samaria came to draw water. ‘Give Me a drink,’ Jesus said to her.” John 4:7
This woman ventured out of her home for a routine task of fetching water from the public well. However, little did she know that this seemingly ordinary errand would lead to an extraordinary encounter with the Messiah, who would reveal Himself as her personal Savior. She was not seeking for Christ, except perhaps the deep yearnings of her empty and unsatisfied heart became a faint cry for Him whom she knew not.
It’s impossible to predict when we might encounter Christ. He frequently crosses our paths in various stages of life, often in unexpected places.
This woman under reference was in the way of simple duty, when Christ met her. She was unaware of the glory of the presence right beside her. Jesus met her as a tired and worn-out individual, and won His way to her conscience and heart, before He revealed to her the glory of His presence.
The way of duty is always the surest place to come in contact with Christ. No one ever yet found Him in the path of disobedience, except of course to meet with His indignation and rebuke.
Jesus continually comes to us in unrecognized ways, getting near to us and drawing out our love and trust. And before we ever know that it is Christ, we are loving and trusting Him; and then He drops the veil and shows us His blessed face.
There is another instance here: Jesus began His ministry of blessing to this woman by asking a simple favor of her. “Give me a drink,” He said. Hence He stands before us in some disguise, requesting a service. He seems to be the one asking each and every time and it is truly Him who is about to give to us.
Beloved, It is important to be mindful of how we treat those who may appear to be in desperate need, as our kindness in these moments can lead to profound revelations. There was a story about an old cobbler who made extensive preparations in anticipation of a visit from the LORD. God never arrived. However, when a beggar arrived, the compassionate cobbler provided him with a pair of shoes. When an old lady came, the cobbler helped her with her load and gave her food. When a lost child came, the cobbler took her back to her mother. Then soft in the silence, he heard a voice: Lift up your heart, for I kept my word. Three times I came to your friendly door; Three times my shadow was on your floor and three times you heard me out. I was the beggar with bruised feet, I was the woman you gave to eat, I was the child lost on the street.
Let us be spiritually sensitive! Let us not be like those of whom Jesus said, that they did not recognize the time of their visitation or encounter with the great Revealer and hence totally missed what God was doing in their generation (Luke 19:39-44). The plans God has for you are considerable—don’t underestimate your moment.
Pray always! Be spiritually sensitive! Be vigilant and Stay Blessed!
