Tinubu Promises Review of Media Tariffs After Meeting with Industry Leaders
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured leaders of Nigeria’s media industry that concerns over tariffs affecting their operations will be carefully reviewed, signaling the possibility of adjustments to policies that have drawn criticism from the sector.
The president gave the assurance during an interfaith iftar gathering with media executives at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where discussions touched on challenges facing the industry, including tariffs and operational costs.
Tinubu said he had listened closely to the issues raised by the media leaders and acknowledged the need to examine the matter further.
“I’ve listened carefully to you. It’s as if you’ve worked with me today. The question of tariff was discussed this afternoon,” the president said while addressing the gathering.
He added that although he could not immediately confirm the steps already taken regarding the issue, he would revisit the matter to ensure any oversight is corrected.
“What I cannot report back here is whether I took action in the area that affected you or not, but if I miss that, I’ll go back to rectify it,” Tinubu stated.
The president also used the occasion to commend media organisations for their role in national development. According to him, the media industry remains vital not only for information dissemination but also for job creation and public education.
Tinubu noted that media institutions continue to provide livelihoods for many Nigerians while contributing to the country’s democratic growth.
“The joy is that many of you have employed people to live a life and inform people to get information, educate and strengthen our minds,” he said.
Industry stakeholders have in recent months raised concerns about tariffs and regulatory costs affecting the sustainability of media operations, particularly in an environment already challenged by rising operational expenses and declining advertising revenues.
The president’s comments are seen as an indication that the government may engage further with the industry to address policy concerns and support the continued growth of Nigeria’s media sector.
