Amaechi Issues Bold Warning—Nigerians Must Act To Stop Political Thieves
Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transportation, has stated that unless people rebel against Nigerian politicians and demand accountability, they will continue to embezzle public funds.
In an interview with Prime Time on Arise Television on Friday, Amaechi bemoaned the nation’s steadily deteriorating governance.
The former governor of Rivers State stated that he had long cautioned Nigerians about the actions of the ruling class, emphasizing that politicians have persisted in making their constituents poor while enriching themselves.
“As a governor of Rivers State at Freedom House in a ceremony organised by Prof Wole Soyinka, I told Nigerians that we the politicians will not stop stealing if Nigerians don’t stone us.”
“The politicians are impoverishing Nigerians,” he said.
Amaechi, however, maintained that not all politicians are corrupt, describing himself as “a different politician” while noting that some governors had made meaningful contributions to governance.
“I’m a different politician and there are others as well. A lot of governors have made positive contributions. But governance is slowly dying and it’s quite painful.”
Hmmm! Politicians often won’t stop stealing, and it takes a politician to truly understand that corruption exists among their peers. This is a powerful and revealing statement. Despite these challenges, what we genuinely need are leaders who lead with sincerity, integrity, and a genuine commitment to the welfare of the people. Only then can we hope for a future where honesty prevails and true progress is achieved.
