The Federal Government of Nigeria has called on the Government of the Republic of South Africa to take urgent and decisive measures to ensure the safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals residing within its borders.
The appeal was conveyed in an official statement released on Monday in Abuja by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, following reports of fresh attacks targeting foreign citizens in parts of South Africa.
According to the statement, Nigeria expressed concern over the resurgence of violence against foreign nationals in major South African cities and urged authorities to act swiftly to protect lives and property. The Nigerian government noted that, as longstanding allies on the African continent, both countries share a responsibility to uphold the values of unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.
The statement coincided with South Africa’s commemoration of Freedom Day, a historic occasion marking the country’s first democratic elections in 1994, which brought an end to apartheid and ushered in majority rule. Nigeria extended its goodwill to the South African government and its people, congratulating them on over three decades of democratic governance and their continued commitment to constitutional democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.
Nigeria further reaffirmed the deep-rooted relationship between both nations, which was forged during the anti-apartheid struggle and has since evolved into a broad partnership covering trade, defence, education, and cultural exchange. The government also highlighted ongoing cooperation through platforms such as the Bi-National Commission, as well as joint engagements within the African Union and the United Nations.
Emphasising the importance of African solidarity, Nigeria reiterated its confidence that both countries would continue to work together to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development across the continent.
The renewed diplomatic appeal comes against the backdrop of rising tensions and reported incidents of violence against foreign-owned businesses and individuals in South Africa, with some groups calling for the expulsion of non-nationals. Nigeria has urged prompt and effective action to prevent further escalation and to reassure affected communities.
