NDLEA Arrests Former Lagos Councillor With 40kg of Cannabis in Ibeju-Lekki

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a former councillor in Lagos State after recovering a large quantity of cannabis from his residence in Ibeju-Lekki.

The suspect, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, aged 45, was apprehended on March 2, 2026, during an operation carried out by NDLEA officers at his home in Ilado area of Ibeju-Lekki. Officials said the raid followed intelligence reports linking him to drug sales and trafficking activities in the area.

During the search of the property, operatives discovered about 40 kilograms of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, concealed in one of the rooms in the house. According to the agency, Olalekan admitted that both the drugs and the building belonged to him.

Before his arrest, Olalekan had served two terms as councillor representing the Orimedu community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area. He is also reported to be working as a legislative aide.

Spokesperson of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, confirmed that the arrest was part of a wider nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking and distribution networks across the country. He explained that the operation was based on credible intelligence gathered by the agency’s officers.

In a separate operation linked to the ongoing enforcement drive, NDLEA operatives intercepted a commercial bus carrying about 500 pieces of illicit drugs. The agency said the seizure formed part of its intensified campaign to dismantle drug distribution routes.

The arrest of a former local government official has raised fresh concerns about the involvement of public office holders in criminal activities and the impact such actions may have on public trust in leadership.

Authorities say Olalekan will face prosecution under Nigeria’s drug trafficking laws. If found guilty, the offence carries severe penalties including lengthy prison terms.

The development also highlights the NDLEA’s growing focus on Lagos State, which security agencies say remains a major hub for drug distribution due to its busy seaports, road networks and commercial transport routes. The agency has reiterated its commitment to strengthening surveillance and enforcement in the state as part of efforts to curb the spread of illicit drugs.
