Abba Yusuf Dissolves Kano Higher Education Ministry, Restructures Sector

Abba Yusuf has approved the dissolution of the state’s Ministry of Higher Education as part of a wider restructuring of the education sector in Kano State.

The decision effectively removes the governor’s deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, from his position as commissioner supervising the ministry.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the restructuring is aimed at improving coordination within the education sector and accelerating ongoing reforms.

Under the new arrangement, the now-defunct Ministry of Higher Education will be merged with the Kano State Ministry of Education. The responsibilities previously handled by the ministry will now be managed through a newly created Directorate of Higher Education within the Ministry of Education.

Government officials said the directorate will be led by a Permanent Secretary and supported by the required administrative staff to ensure effective oversight of higher education institutions in the state.

The restructuring will also see agencies that previously operated under the Ministry of Higher Education, including the state’s Scholarship Board, returned to the Ministry of Education. State-owned universities and other higher institutions will now be supervised by the newly established directorate.

The state government explained that the move forms part of its broader education sector reform programme aimed at improving efficiency, strengthening policy coordination across different levels of education, and eliminating duplication of responsibilities.

Governor Yusuf said the changes are designed to streamline administrative operations, improve transparency, and enhance accountability in the management of education across the state.

He also emphasised that the restructuring will help reduce the cost of governance while strengthening the overall administration of the education system.

To ensure smooth implementation, the governor has directed key administrative offices to begin immediate adjustments to the new structure.

According to the statement, the offices of the Secretary to the State Government and the Head of Service have been instructed to oversee the prompt realignment of affected ministries, departments, and agencies.
