Ancelotti leaves Neymar out of Brazil’s March friendlies ahead of World Cup

Neymar’s potential involvement in the 2026 World Cup has become a major topic of debate in Brazil, with supporters urging his inclusion as the tournament approaches.

However, with fewer than four months remaining before the competition begins, uncertainty surrounds his place in the plans of head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Recent headlines intensified speculation after Neymar indicated he could retire when his contract with Santos FC expires in December 2026.

That timeline has sharpened his short-term focus on returning to the Brazil national football team, particularly with the March international window looming. However, those ambitions may not align with Ancelotti’s current strategy.

According to ESPN Brasil, Ancelotti does not plan to include Neymar in the squad for the March fixtures, which would see Brazil face France and Croatia in friendly matches.

If omitted, Neymar’s next opportunity would depend on the final squad announcement in May, when Brazil are scheduled to play two additional warm-up games ahead of the World Cup in June.

Santos’ recent elimination by Novorizontino in the Campeonato Paulista was not expected to influence the national team decision-making process.

Despite being monitored by the Brazilian Football Confederation, the reported plan was never for Neymar to feature prominently in the final matches before the definitive squad selection.

Neymar’s return from knee surgery in mid-February and his improved form toward the end of last season had sparked optimism about a resurgence.

Nevertheless, the limited preparation window has complicated his path back. Reports indicate the intention has always been for him to regain match fitness gradually with Santos before being seriously reconsidered for international duty.

Ancelotti has consistently stated that the door remains open if Neymar demonstrates full physical readiness.

Tactical compatibility is reportedly not a concern; instead, the coaching staff will assess in May whether he can perform at the intensity and level required for a World Cup campaign.

Is Brazil strong enough without Neymar, or does he remain indispensable?
