APC Stakeholders Endorse Barakat Odunuga-Bakare for Surulere Assembly Seat Ahead of 2027 Poll

Some political stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Surulere Constituency I have endorsed Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, former Special Adviser on Housing to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, ahead of the 2027 Lagos State House of Assembly election.

The endorsement followed a week-long tour of political wards across the constituency by Odunuga-Bakare and her campaign team as she sought grassroots support for her ambition.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the tour covered Wards E, E1, F1, F2, F3, G, G1, G2 and G3, alongside consultations with key party stakeholders. The exercise concluded on Saturday.

Odunuga-Bakare, who recently stepped down from her role in the Sanwo-Olu administration, is seeking the APC ticket for Surulere Constituency I. She is expected to battle incumbent lawmaker and Nollywood actor Desmond Elliot, who currently represents the constituency and is reportedly seeking a fourth term in office.

Speaking during the ward tour, Khadijat Kareem, a political leader in Surulere, threw her weight behind Odunuga-Bakare, describing her as experienced and capable of delivering effective representation.

“When we talk about experience and competence, Barakat has both. She served well as leader of the legislative council and as special adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu. She has what it takes to represent us well,” Kareem said.

She added that Odunuga-Bakare’s understanding of governance and youthful energy make her a strong candidate for the position.

Kareem also said the constituency needed a representative who could attract more developmental projects, noting that residents were already benefiting from the policies of President Bola Tinubu.

Another APC chieftain, Sulaiman Yusuf, praised Desmond Elliot for his service but said it was time for fresh leadership in the constituency.

He noted that Elliot had served three terms and argued that Odunuga-Bakare deserved an opportunity to represent the constituency.

In her response, Odunuga-Bakare expressed appreciation to party leaders and supporters for backing her ambition.

She said she remains committed to the development of Surulere and promised quality representation if elected.

“We must remain united for the progress of APC and Surulere. This is not the time for division but a time to work together for the future of our constituency,” she said.

As part of her outreach efforts, the former aide also donated N1 million to party members in each of the wards visited.
