Governor Bala Mohammed has announced plans to contest the Bauchi South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, putting an end to speculation about a possible presidential ambition.
Mohammed made this known during an interview with BBC Hausa aired on Saturday, shortly after a Supreme Court ruling nullified the national convention organised by the Peoples Democratic Party faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki in Ibadan in November 2025.
The judgment has further deepened the leadership crisis within the PDP and triggered fresh conversations around possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
In recent weeks, there had been growing speculation that the Bauchi governor was considering a move to either the African Democratic Congress or the All Progressives Congress.
The rumours gained momentum after Mohammed hosted key political figures at the Bauchi Government House, including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal. He also held separate meetings with Nentawe Yilwatda and Abba Yusuf.
However, reports indicate that the talks ended after both sides failed to reach an agreement on power-sharing arrangements.
Speaking on his political future, Mohammed said discussions regarding his next political move were close to being concluded and that his supporters would soon be informed of his final decision.
He made it clear that he has no plans to run for president, noting that he supports the zoning of the presidency to southern Nigeria in the interest of fairness within the PDP.
According to him, his decision to seek a seat in the Senate was influenced by calls from constituents in Bauchi South who want him to represent them at the National Assembly.
Mohammed also revealed that he has been engaging with opposition figures such as Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi over possible political cooperation ahead of 2027.
He dismissed claims that the Supreme Court ruling favoured the faction linked to Nyesom Wike, arguing that both sides were affected by the judgment.
The governor added that the PDP’s Board of Trustees would manage the party’s affairs temporarily until an interim leadership structure is established.
