The Federal Government has declared Thursday, 19th March, and Friday, 20th March, 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, which signifies the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement released by Dr Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, on Tuesday.

The minister, in his message to Muslims faithful on the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan, encouraged them to sustain the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice, which were emphasised during the holy month.

Tunji-Ojo further called on all Nigerians to use the holiday period to pray for Nigeria’s continued peace, unity and prosperity.

The minister encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly and extend acts of kindness to those in need within society.

He assured that the federal government remains committed to fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians.

NewsRegion in February had reported that the Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III, had declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs also confirmed the Ramadan crescent sightings from three different locations in Nigeria.
