SDP Warns Against Political Violence in Oyo Following Alleged Attack on Ex-Deputy Governor’s Residence

The Oyo State chapter of the Social Democratic Party has cautioned the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party against actions that could escalate political tensions and threaten peace in the state.

The warning follows reports of an attack on the residence of former Oyo State Deputy Governor, Hazeem Gbolarumi, during the Peoples Democratic Party’s congress activities on Saturday.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the state chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Michael Okunlade, said the party learned about the alleged incident through reports circulating on radio and social media platforms.

Okunlade stressed the importance of protecting Oyo State’s reputation as one of the most peaceful states in the country, especially as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He urged political parties operating in the state to prioritise constructive engagement and focus their campaigns on policies and programmes that address the needs of residents rather than engaging in confrontational politics.

According to him, as preparations for the next election cycle gather momentum, political actors must demonstrate responsibility in their conduct and ensure that their activities do not create unnecessary tension within communities.

Okunlade warned that political competition should not be allowed to degenerate into violence capable of disrupting the state’s peaceful environment. He advised the Peoples Democratic Party to properly manage its internal processes and ensure that its political engagements do not lead to unrest.

The SDP chairman also called on the police and other security agencies to remain vigilant and closely monitor political activities across the state. He noted that law enforcement authorities must ensure that influential political figures do not use their positions to incite disorder or destabilise the state.

He further reaffirmed the Social Democratic Party’s commitment to maintaining peace among its members and supporters as the party prepares for the 2027 elections. Okunlade added that the party would not tolerate any form of indiscipline within its ranks, emphasising the need for members to remain law abiding and focused on democratic engagement.
