A former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has announced his intention to run for the Ogun State governorship seat in 2027. Sowunmi announced this during a Zoom interactive session with his supporters and journalists on Tuesday.
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party stated that his decision was influenced by ongoing development issues affecting the state.
He stated that his ambition is motivated by the need to address issues such as insecurity, education, and healthcare, along with other governance challenges.
“As a key stakeholder, I have consistently provided support, and at this important moment, I am presenting my best ideas for governance in our state,” he stated.
Sowunmi expressed concern over the inconsistency in policies and programs focused on the development of Ogun State.
He stated that the state has not fully utilized the economic opportunities presented by its proximity to Lagos State on multiple occasions.
“The design of Ogun should focus on serving all residents, not just those in Oke-Mosan, but everyone across the state.”
Ogun has faced criticism regarding its hospital interventions, raising concerns among the public. The infrastructure at the Sacred Heart Hospital, the oldest government hospital in Abeokuta, suggests that Ogun has the potential to become the healthcare capital of the South-West, he stated.
While lamenting the series of crises that have continued to rock the PDP, Sowunmi said he was monitoring the activities of different political parties and would soon declare for one.
