The Lagos State Government has issued a warning to residents, particularly those in low-lying areas, to remain vigilant as flash floods are expected due to ongoing heavy rainfall. In a statement released on Saturday, State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, highlighted forecasts indicating thunderstorms and widespread convective rainfall in the coming days.
Wahab explained that the geostationary imagery suggests that many regions will face intense rainfall, which could lead to flash floods, a concern previously communicated to residents earlier this year. Areas near rivers and lagoons are particularly at risk, with potential for high currents accompanying the floods.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during the rains and to monitor their children closely, especially those on mid-term holidays, to prevent accidents related to playing in the rain or swimming in floodwaters. The commissioner also cautioned motorists and pedestrians against wading through flooded areas, as vehicles may become submerged and individuals could be swept away.
Additionally, Wahab warned that heavy rainfall could raise lagoon water levels, resulting in tidal locks that hinder drainage. He urged residents to refrain from disposing of refuse in drains, as this can block water flow and exacerbate flooding issues. The state is actively maintaining and cleaning drains year-round to manage rainfall runoff, but residents’ cooperation is essential to mitigate the impacts of excessive rainfall.
