“If I Can Be Tracked, Why Not Terrorists?” — Ndume Slams Security Agencies

Senator Ali Ndume has claimed that his phone conversations are being monitored, raising fresh concerns about surveillance practices and the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security architecture.

The senator made the disclosure on Thursday during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television. He revealed that he has repeatedly been advised to exercise caution in his phone discussions due to alleged monitoring by authorities.

When asked directly whether he believed the government was tracking his communications, Ndume responded affirmatively. However, he downplayed the personal impact of such surveillance, stating that it is not his primary concern given the country’s broader security challenges.

Instead, he questioned the priorities of security agencies, arguing that while there appears to be capacity to monitor public figures, the same efficiency is not evident in tackling terrorism and banditry. Ndume pointed to the growing trend of criminal groups openly sharing evidence of their activities on social media platforms, describing it as a troubling contradiction.

According to him, the situation raises serious questions about intelligence gathering and operational effectiveness. He expressed confusion over why individuals in positions of public visibility could be tracked, yet security agencies struggle to locate and neutralise armed groups whose activities are sometimes publicly documented.

Ndume maintained that although he does not object to being monitored, the focus should shift towards addressing the country’s pressing security threats. He stressed that the ability to track communications should translate into more decisive action against criminal networks operating across the country.

His remarks add to ongoing debates about surveillance, privacy, and the broader performance of Nigeria’s security institutions in confronting insurgency and organised crime.
